So maybe you're a poor college student, or maybe you're just cheap. What if your landlord didn't fix the furnace yet? Maybe you live in an old drafty house. Perhaps you want to curb CO2 emissions. Whatever the reason is, it's cold and you need new ways of keeping warm. Here are some of those tricks!

Steps

Part 1: Heating your House Without a Heater
  1. Close all of your windows properly. This includes making sure storm windows are installed and closed in place if you have them. Windows should be latched. Open them during the day if the outside temperature is higher than the inside temperature.
    • Keep your windows air-tight. You may want to purchase removable window-caulk or plastic to better seal them. At a minimum, stuff a towel or shirt in front of any noticeable leaks.
  2. Use cheap clear shower curtains over the windows that receive sun light. This will keep the cold air out, and the warmth from the sun will heat your house without cold air coming in. You could also cover your windows with clear plastic sheets and make it airtight.
  3. Put up curtains. A set of heavy curtains can block heavy drafts of air. Open them when the sun is shining and close them when it's not.
  4. Seal your doors. Check around the door frame and also under the door. You may want to buy weather stripping or a door sweep. Again, at minimum, make a draft dodger or stuff a towel at the bottom of the door.
  5. Let As Much Sun Hit Your house as possible. Check for obstructions (e.g. plants, sheds) that might keep the sun's rays from reaching your house. Remove items leaning against walls on the sunny side of your house. (Ideally, put them back again at night for additional insulation).
  6. Close off any unused rooms. The closed door makes that room another barrier between you and the frigid outdoors. It also stops air from circulating as much, which reduces heat loss.
    • Home improvement stores sell magnetic register covers to 'shut off' forced air furnace registers in unused rooms. That way when the heater does click on, only the registers in the rooms you use will pump out heat. This makes for more efficient use of the heater.
    • Check that all heat registers are adjusted open, especially where plumbing pipes might freeze. Unblock cold air returns in heated rooms (they may be blocked with furniture or rug) so heat can circulate efficiently.
  7. Put down a rug or carpet. Rugs and carpets help prevent heat loss through the floor. They are generally warmer to the touch than wood or stone, and so offer a warmer surface to walk on.
  8. Add insulation in the attic and the crawl space. A lot of heat escapes through the attic, as warm air rises and cold air sinks. Make sure that your attic has enough insulation.
  9. Cook.
    • Bake cookies or a pie. Your oven will help to dry the air and heat the kitchen. The kitchen will be warm while you are cooking, and then you can have a great home cooked meal too!
    • Limit cooking that gives off steam, as this will increase the humidity in the air and make your house damp. Lowering humidity in the winter time helps you to feel warmer. Water vapor (humidity) has a greater heat capacity (ability to absorb heat) than dry air. As a result, humid air feels colder in winter than does dry air and it takes more heat to make damp air feel comfortable.
  10. Light a candle. A candle/candles can produce a lot of heat, just be mindful of where they are placed and do not leave them unattended. A trip to most any grocery store or discount store can provide you with a number of candles cheap!
    • Use a candle heater. It doesn't create as much heat as a fireplace or real heater, but will create warmth very cheaply.
  11. Turn on some incandescent lights. The average incandescent light bulb releases up to 95% of its energy as heat rather than light, making it an extremely efficient heat source.
    • Compact Fluorescent and LED lights are not helpful in warming your room, so save them for warmer days and use the money you saved to pay the heat bill.

Part 2: Staying Warm in a Colder House
  1. Drink warm beverages. Warm beverages will raise your core temperature. The process can be very relaxing and even stimulating. Make a cup of tea or coffee. Sip on some Warm borth.
  2. Dress warmly. A hat is your number one friend at a time like this. A large percentage of body heat loss occurs in the head region so it is crucial to keep your head covered. A turtleneck sweater can also work wonders. Dress in layers, especially with wool or cotton clothing. Wear slippers or warm socks. When you are sitting still, wrap a thick blanket around you.

    • Be active. Moving around produces body heat! The more active you are, the better your blood circulation will be. This means that warm blood gets to your fingers and toes, keeping them warm.
  5. Find a friend or pet to snuggle with. The living body of any warm-blooded animal is a furnace unto itself. Snuggle with your cat or dog to keep each other warm.
  6. Sit on a 50 watt heating pad. Rather than heating the whole house or room, sit on a low wattage heating pad. You can also make your own heating pads:
    • Use a hot water bottle. It's great for warming your hands and lap while sitting; also put it under the covers at the foot of the bed.
    • Microwave socks or small homemade "pillows" (also known as heat packs) filled with rice, dried corn, or beans for one minute in the microwave and use as a heating pad or bed-warmer.
  7. Buy a thick bathrobe or dressing gown. Think of it as a big, fluffy blanket with sleeves. They are very warm and comfortable, and you can even sleep in them!
  8. Go visiting/vacationing. Purposefully spend time in a location that is heated at no cost to you: library, church, a friend's house, etc.
  9. An electric blanket can keep you very warm and comfortable in the night and it is more economical that an inefficient and expensive old wall heater.

  • If you have hay fever, eczema, or other skin or respiratory allergies, your dandruff may be caused in part by an allergic reaction. In this situation, you may find it helpful to shampoo LESS frequently, so the natural oils that protect your scalp aren't stripped away. Allergic people may also react to dandruff shampoos by generating more dandruff. If you think this may be the case for you, try washing your hair with conditioner only, or washing less frequently.
  • Try the condition only treatment first during a vacation or a time when you will be less publicly visible, since your scalp will be very oily at first. It will take two weeks to a month for the balance of oils on your hair and scalp to adjust itself.
  • Rinsing your scalp with a rinse of 1/4 cup white vinegar to 3/4 cup water may help the problem. The natural acids will help loosen any sebum (dead skin and oils) that clings to your scalp and flakes to form dandruff. Rinse thoroughly with WARM, not hot, water. If you don't rinse well, you will smell like vinegar. While white vinegar is the gold standard of home remedies, apple cider vinegar or lemon juice should work as well. Lemon juice may lighten dark hair.
  • Tea tree oil has antiseptic qualities that may help kill the fungus, and keep your scalp moisturized. You can buy a small bottle at many groceries and health food stores, and add 5-6 drops to your regular shampoo. Or just purchase a shampoo that contains tea tree oil.
  • Buy and use two or three different types of regular shampoo and don't use the same one two days in a row. This way build up is minimized. For some reason this gets rid of lesser cases of dandruff.
  • Plain old fashioned Listerine® (the original amber formula) works wonders on dandruff! In fact, up until the 1980s, the label even mentioned that it was effective on infectious dandruff. Daily or several times a week, saturate a cotton ball with Listerine and swab over your scalp. The menthol and methyl salicylate are particularly effective at helping to relieve scalp itch. You may also choose to use Listerine as a shampoo rinse, it has similar effectiveness when used this way.
  • Leave-in treatments like Scalpicin® may be useful for particularly itchy scalps. They contain either anti-inflammatory ingredients (like hydrocortisone) or one of the active anti-dandruff ingredients. Usually these treatments also contain menthol, which provides a cooling effect that reduces the sensation of itching.


Warnings

  • Some anti-dandruff shampoos, such as those containing selenium sulfide or coal tar* may discolor light or dyed hair.
  • Discontinue use of any anti-dandruff shampoo or medication if the condition worsens or spreads, or if you notice side effects. Consult your primary care physician or dermatologist if the problem doesn't go away.
  • Watch out for shampoos that are packaged to look like dandruff shampoos but only say that they will rinse away loose dandruff. Any shampoo will rinse away loose dandruff.
  • Using more than one anti-dandruff product may cause redness and irritation.
  • Avoid Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS). It's a foaming compound that's a mild irritant. Some people find that using specialist soap without SLS as a shampoo for a couple of weeks makes their dandruff go away. You'll probably get it back if you switch back to ordinary shampoo. 
  • You could pick up a shampoo without SLS (and other potential irritants) from a store like Whole Foods, or Wild Oats.
  • If the dandruff doesn't begin to go away within 1 week seek medical attention. There may be a fungus involved. A treatment containing hydrocortisone will feed many topical fungi, which will just make a bad case of dandruff much worse.
  • The FDA and the European Union have declared Coal Tar as a carcinogen.  Weigh the benefit of dandruff-free hair against the cancer risk, which is much, much smaller than the cancer risks from smoking or suntanning.
