How to Find a Cheap Motel or Hostel
Finding inexpensive accommodations may take a bit of work, but it is possible.
Steps
- Get a travel guide for your destination. Publishers like Rough Guide, Let's Go and Lonely Planet usually write travel books targeted to younger (read: poorer) travelers and include lists of cheap places to stay.
- Check out Hostelling International online. They run affordable, comfortable hostels worldwide.
- See if there is a YWCA or YMCA at your destination that provides beds for travelers.
- Some schools offer accommodations to their alumni, such as the Harvard Club, the worldwide network of Sacred Heart schools etc. Check to see if your college does the same.
- Try discount travel sites like Orbitz, Travelocity etc.
- Subscribe to weekly travel discount online mailing lists such as Sherman's or Travelzoo.
- Read Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel.
- Google "cheap hotels [name of destination]".
- Look at travel blogs and travel wikis.
Tips
- When searching for cheap rooms, use words like last-minute or last minute to get the cheapest accommodations available.
Warnings
- Make sure the hotel isn't dirty because of something unsanitary or something wrong with the building in general, such as a cockroach infestation!
