How to Share a Hotel Room with Strangers

How to Share a Hotel Room with Strangers

Overnight school trips or group tours may have you finding yourself sharing a hotel room with someone you don't (yet) know. If you are used to having a private place to stay when away from home, it may be difficult at first to sleep in and share the same room with strangers, but easily overcome. This article will help you comfortably share a hotel room with strangers, and make your stay an enjoyable one.

Steps

  1. Get to know the people you're sharing the room with. This is the most important step! If you haven't done so already, introduce yourself and talk with each other as you unpack.
  2. Divide up where your clothes and other belongings will go. Most hotel rooms have enough closet or drawer space for at least two to three people. If this is not the case, put only a few items away and leave the rest in your luggage.
  3. Inform your roommate(s) of your sleeping habits, schedule, and other concerns. If you're prone to waking up at the crack of dawn or going to bed at three in the morning, let that be known as soon as possible to eliminate any disturbances. If you are all following the same itinerary, agree on a specific time to set the alarm clock or for lights-out at night.
  4. Be a nice and considerate person. Try not to be disagreeable or unwilling to compromise; it will just make your stay very unpleasant. If you find that you absolutely cannot continue to share a room with strangers, don't verbalize it. Simply ask if you can be switched to another room or if you can pay to have a private room.
  5. Be discreet when dressing, undressing, or changing. Avoid spending an unreasonable length of time in the bathroom if there are others waiting. If you make a mess, clean it up.
  6. Understand that you are all in this together for the duration of your stay. Everyone should be sharing an equal responsibility in keeping the room neat, allowing others privacy, and being considerate of those sleeping.

Tips

  • Get to know the people you're sharing the room with! This can't be stressed enough. You will not have an enjoyable experience, nor will you be looked upon favorably, if you ignore or refuse to get along with the people sharing the room with you.
  • If you have to share a bed with another person, put a big pillow in between you two.
  • If you need to alert them of snoring, sleep-talking, or any other disturbing behaviors, try to be as polite as possible.
  • Keep any valuables in a safe location, like on your person. You don't want to lose anything and being with strangers increases the chances of it.
