How to Regrow Hair After Hair Loss (Women)

In their mid-life years, many women suffer from dramatic hair thinning that shows up as bald spots or parts of the scalp showing through thinning hair. This is most often a huge shock to women, who feel helpless as the process takes hold and the problem worsens over time.

Steps

  1. Go to your Physician and ask to have your total and free testosterone levels measured through a blood test. High levels of testosterone in women cause balding in women, just as they do in men. If your levels are high, ask your doctor if you are a candidate for Spiranolactone, a prescription drug that helps to lower Testosterone levels in woman This is an important step, because if your hair loss is related to high androgen levels, you must treat the underlying problem.
  2. Throw away your hairbrushes. From now on you will use a wide-tooth plastic comb to brush your hair. Thinning hair is most often brittle and hairbrushes break hair strands easily. You can purchase a wide-tooth comb for detangling, at drugstores.
  3. If you color your own hair using products available in the drugstore, stop using any product that contains ammonia. These are usually the hair coloring kits labeled as "permanent", that are advertised to last 6-8 weeks. Ammonia weakens your hair, continuing the breakage cycle. So what if you need to color your hair? You must switch to an ammonia-free hair color product. Most of the popular hair coloring brands have an ammonia-free product (it will state it is ammonia free on the box). These coloring products do not contain ammonia, but they do contain hydrogen peroxide, which is not as damaging as ammonia. These coloring product are typically advertised to last up to 28 shampoos and may be labeled "semi-permanent". You must also purchase an additional coloring product that is both ammonia and Hydrogen peroxide free. These products come pre-mixed, have no odor, and can be used more often to touch up gray areas, like around the hairline. The ammonia- and hydrogen peroxide-free product is typically advertised to last up to 6 shampoos, and may be labeled as "temporary"Hair colors.
    • Your going forward method for coloring your hair is as follows: Use the semi-permanent hair color to color your hair all over your head, every 2-3 months. In between, use the temporary hair color to cover grays when you need to, about every 2-3 weeks. Your hair will get stronger and stronger every month - with much less breakage!
  4. Try to lower the frequency of hair washes. Every second or third day if possible. This allows the natural oils in your hair TO add moisture and shine. Your must use a very hydrating conditioner after shampooing. It should make it easy for you to detangle your hair in the shower using the wide-toothed comb. Rinse the conditioner out of your hair well or you will have a sticky residue. After each hair wash you must use an instant leave-in hair repair product that contains proteins. This is important because this type of product puts back moisture in damaged, processed hair - you will be able to bring your damaged brittle hair back to life over time, without cutting your hair! Finally, if you use a heat to dry or style your hair, you must use a heat hair protector product on your hair prior to drying or styling. Once again, this will help Protect your hair from heat damage.
  5. As your apply this regimen, use products that help mask thinning spots, or exposed scalp. The regimen will take time. In a few months you will see your hair will become much stronger.

Tips

  • Wash your hair with shampoo as infrequently as you can get away with, such as once every two or three days. Wetting it only and styling as Usual may help reduce the number of shampoos needed. Use a gentle shampoo that you don't need a lot of such as "Hask Placenta Shampoo with Olive Oil". You don't need much of it, and it doesn't strip your hair of its natural oils.
  • Use a very Hydrating conditioner such as Clairol Herbal Essences "Hydralicious self-targeting conditioner". Your hair will easily detangle (remember, you want to minimize hair breakage).
  • Use a hair repair treatment, every time you shampoo. An Excellent one is "Hask Placenta No-Rinse Instant Hair Repair Leave-In Treatment".
  • Always use a heat protectant product if you style with heat. An excellent one is "It's a 10 Miracle leave-in product". It is also a detangler, controls frizz, and reduces hair breakage.
  • If you need more help to control frizzy hair, an excellent product is "Fantasia Frizz Buster Serum". A VERY small amount (less than dime size) will tame even long hair! Use too much and your hair will be weighed down.
  • Color your hair (with semi-permanent Hair colors such as Clair Natural Instincts) as infrequently as you can get away with, such as once every two or three months. Only color where you need it most. In between all-over hair coloring with semi-permanent color, use a non-ammonia, non-peroxide hair color (such as Clairol Loving Care).
  • You do NOT have to cut your damaged hair off! Using the above regimen will repair your hair over time. Having to cut already thin hair is demoralizing and totally unnecessary. It helps to trim the ends every 4-6 weeks to reduce split ends.
  • Do NOT highlight your hair - it is one of the most damaging things you can do to your hair.
  • Monitor your progress. Be aware of how much hair you are losing - look around the sink area, look on the floor, see how much is coming out when you comb or style. As your hair gets healthier, you will see how many fewer hairs break off.
  • Be patient. It took months for your hair to thin out. It will take months for it to thicken up.
  • Make sure you get an assessment from your doctor on the possible reasons your hair is thinning out. It's important to treat any underlying cause. If your hair thinning is due to hormonal issues, no amount of use of Minoxidil (the ingredient found in Rogaine) is going to help.
